YSF Call For Financial Support For The Organization Of Scientific Events/Workshops
The Young Scientist Forum (YSF) of the European Society for Biomaterials sponsors the organization of events/workshops in 2025 for a total amount up to 1,200 Euros.
The final aim of the call is to promote the training of young scientists and to stimulate dissemination in the field of biomaterials in Europe. YSF may decide to partially sponsor the requested amount, depending on the number of selected applications and evaluation given to the applications.
The deadline for the call is January 31st each year. The selected proposal(s) will be announced no later than March 1st and will receive financial support for the event to be organized in the current year. Face-to-face, online or hybrid events are eligible for funding.
The attached template must be used to apply, only applications in this format will be considered.
National Chapters (NC) representatives of the Young Scientist Forum are especially encouraged to apply, but also any other young ESB member (under 40 years old) can send an application. In this case, it is mandatory to contact the NC and attach to the application the confirmation that the NC was informed (e.g., the text of the email with which the national chapter was notified).
2025 Awardees:
Claudia Martins with a project “12th Galenus International Workshop: Bioengineering the future of drug delivery”
The "12th Galenus International Workshop: Bioengineering the Future of Drug Delivery" took place on March 26th-27th, 2025, at i3S - University of Porto, Portugal. This in-person event, co-organized with the Galenus Foundation (Austria), was a premier platform to foster innovation and collaboration at the forefront of biomaterials science and bioengineering. The Organizing Committee included Dr. Claudia Martins (i3S), Prof. Bruno Sarmento (i3S) and Dr. Cornelia D. Sonntag (Galenus Foundation). The workshop addressed cutting-edge topics such as nanomedicine, drug delivery science, biomimetic in vitro models, and biomaterials design. Keynote and invited speakers included Robert Langer (MIT), Miriam Breunig (University of Regensburg), Vincent Jannin (Lonza), Samuel Sánchez (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia), João Mano (University of Aveiro), Elias Fattal (Université Paris-Saclay), Anette Müllertz (University of Copenhagen), among many others. Young scientists had the opportunity to present their work through oral presentation slots, and participated in a "Young Scientist Poster Networking Session" featuring more than 100 poster presentations and a Porto d'Honra. Awards were given to recognize the best oral and poster presentations, fostering future leaders in biomaterials research.

Clara García Astrain, Nieves Cubo Mateo, and Andreia Trindade Pereira with a project “Young Researchers' Activities at the XLVII International Congress of the Iberian Society of Biomechanics and Biomaterials, SIBB, 2025”
The Young Researchers' Activities at the XLVII International Congress of the Iberian Society of Biomechanics and Biomaterials (SIBB) 2025 aim to foster scientific communication and collaboration among early-career researchers from different countries.
The program will include a scientific mentoring session, where senior researchers provide guidance on career development and research strategies, and interactive networking activities designed to facilitate discussions and collaborations across institutions and disciplines. Two travel grants for the most outstanding contributions will also be awarded with the aim to reduce financial barriers, promote inclusivity, and ensure participation of talented early-career scientists. By encouraging active participation, this initiative seeks to empower young researchers, enhance the visibility of their work, and promote a more interconnected and supportive international research network.
2024 Awardees:
Svenja Nellinger on behalf of the YSF of the German Society for Biomaterials with a project “Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Science”
Esther Sánchez Ribes with a project “Young Researchers' Evening at the XLVI International Congress of the Iberian Society of Biomechanics and Biomaterials, SIBB, 2024”
The Young Researchers' Night activity aimed to foster synergies among young researchers from various research groups to develop future collaborative research lines. Targeted especially at PhD and master's students interested in pursuing a research career, the activity also welcomed congress attendees interested in the topic.
During the session, participants engaged in a networking activity organized by the GIBD to promote interaction and collaboration among attendees. Additionally, a snack was provided in a relaxed atmosphere, creating an ideal space for exchanging experiences among researchers. To conclude the event, a gift sponsored by Lurbel was raffled and presented by Nieves Cubo, the YSF representative in Spain.
2023 Awardees: Caroline S. Taylor and Daphne van der Heide
Caroline’s project was related to Protecting Mental Health during your PhD. Caroline organised an online seminar (2nd August 2023) with Dr Zoë J Ayres, an analytical scientist but also a Mental health advocate driving for change in academia. Zoë has over 78,000 followers on twitter, advocating change in mental health support. In 2022, she released her first book ‘Managing your Mental Health during your PhD: A Survival Guide’. Zoë’s talk informed attendees of the statistics of mental health in academia, her own personal story, as well as many tips and tricks on protecting Mental health during your PhD. The symposium had over 30 attendees, and was promoted over the ESB and UKSB social media platforms.
Daphne's project was to help organize the Swiss-French Biomaterials Young Researchers Summer School on the 15th and 16th of June 2023 at ETH Zurich, organized by a collaboration between two young scientist biomaterials societies: the SSB+RM Young Scientists (from Switzerland) and BIOMAT (from France). A connection between these two societies was made after the ESB annual meeting being held in 2022 in Bordeaux, France and this year in 2023 in Davos, Switzerland and aimed to connect young researchers, active in the biomaterials field, from Switzerland (40 participants) and France (46 participants) during a summer school with multiple keynote lectures, a round table about paving your career path, multiple workshops, lab tours, poster presentations and social activities.
2022 Awardees: Dr. Bert Van den Bogerd and Dr. Paula Soares
Bert’s project was to help organize the Annual Meeting for the Belgian Society for Tissue Engineering (2 - 3/12/2022) in the Hof Van Liere at the University of Antwerp. This conference was dedicated to the Belgian community of young biomaterials scientists. It covers the whole domain of tissue engineering and aims to bring together a mix of different scientific backgrounds.
