Biography

I have completed my UG degree in Chemistry and PG degree in Applied Chemistry and pursued Research at Madurai Kamaraj University. During 2002, joined as Scientist B and pursued research on secondary metabolites of plant and microbes to prevent infection and mould growth in finished leather. Elevated to Scientist C during 2005 and merit promoted to a Principal scientist, during 2012. In the mean time took a charge as Head of the Microbiology Division during 2009. Received Three DBT sponsored projects, two EMPOWER (Phase I and Phase II) projects from CSIR, and one L’Oreal Research grant for pigmentation research. Happy to share that received a prestigious TATA innovative Fellowship project and developed a potential healthcare device namely BIOGLUE for internal wounds. The technology developed received Young investigator award from DST-FICCI- LOCKHEED MARTIN award, and also SKOCH Order of Merit Award. Received Tamil Nadu Scientist award (TANSA), DBT-CREST award, DBT- Overseas Fellowship, participated in GORDON research conference, involved in TWINING program of CSIR-CLRI. Till date, supervised and guided 23 PhD students and two MS (By Research) and 6 M.Phil students. More than 200 students received training and guidance for Interns, as a NODAL OFFICER for COVID19 handled nearly 70000/- samples from May 2021 to Feb 2022. In addition published more than 200 research articles with H-index of 36 and i10 index of 108. Submitted 24 new nucleotide sequences and four 4 protein sequences in NCBI data base and 4 plant and microbial metabolites structure under PubChem. Received Best Women Scientist award (NABS), Received Scientific Excellence award, Innovation in Science Vocational excellence award from Rotary Club. Listed as Top scientists rankings. Publication in Lancet Infectious Diseases (IF 71.6) has received wide attention.

Expertise

As an Interdisciplinary researcher in the field of microbial biotechnology and healthcare , expert in screening of suitable microorganisms for degradation of carcinogenic pollutants, screening of microbial metabolites as antimicrobial agents for antibiotic resistance organisms, screening of plant metabolites to combat biofilm growth, developing biological materials for infected wounds using collagen and other natural polymers, identifying non toxic stabilisers for the biomaterials, tailoring proteins to approximate wounds of internal origin in the form of bioglue, exploring the immobilisation technique to mineralize toxic pollutants, exploring the keratin wastes to a functional material to transform to a tissue mimics, exploring the stem cell transformation and tissue regeneration, developing DNA barcodes for leather to identify the origin. Microbial mediated self assembled products as a model for tissue regeneration. Emulsion and double emulsion based drug delivery system for infected wounds. Microbial vesicles as a carrier for drugs. Exploring the metagenomics of gut microflora with reference to ASD.
