Naples, 21 December 2010

Message from the President

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

2010 has been a very successful year for our Society. The highlights was, undoubtedly, our 23rd ESB Conference, held in Tampere, Finland (11-15 September 2010), and organized by Professor Heimo Yl?nen, Professor Ilkka Kiviranta and Dr. Lila Nikkola.

The 23rd ESB Conference attracted almost 800 participants, coming from all over the world and representing many different disciplines. My thanks go to all of you whose efforts helped to make this event so successful and, on behalf of the entire membership, I would like to reiterate our thanks to Heimo Yl?nen , Ilkka Kiviranta and Lila Nikkola, for all their excellent work in achieving this success. Many young researchers and students were able to participate and to discuss topics of mutual interest in a friendly and informal environment, thanks to the Young Scientist Forum organization. Also at this conference, the 2010 ESB G. Winter and J. Leray Awards were presented. We recognised Prof. Heinrich Planck  as winner of the George Winter Awards, and Damien Lacroix as winner of the Jean Leray Awards. In addition, many othe! r awards were given ? including best oral and poster presentat! ion, Rudolf Cimdins Scholarships and SSB awards - to recognize and support students.

As a Society, we continue to increase our activities and visibility at both the International and the European levels. The International Society of Endovascular Specialist has become a "sister society" of the European Society of Biomaterials and many international conferences have seen the participation of the ESB as co-organizer of specific scientific sessions. I would like to express deep gratitude to the organizers of these sessions for their hard work and efficiency, as well as to our sister societies for their collaboration.

Also on the topic of ESB international activities, the 3rd Chinese-European Symposium on Biomaterials in Regenerative Medicine will take place in Nanjing on 4-8 April, 2011 (website - http://cesb2011.njnu.edu.cn - Abstract Deadline: 30 December, 2010).  This will be chaired by Prof. Xingdong Zhang, Prof. Jian Shen and myself; Prof. J.C. Kirkpatrick and Prof. J. Planell will deliver the keynote lectures from the ESB. I am confident that this major ev! ent  will serve further to promote and stimulate the growth of Chinese-European cooperation in our subject, and I hope that many ESB members will participate at this meeting

We are now looking forward to our 24th ESB Conference, which will be held  in Dublin, Ireland on 4-9 September 2011, and will be organized by Professor Abhay Pandit and Professor Brian Meenan. This conference will include the 10th Young Scientists Forum.

I would like to take this opportunity express our thanks to all members of Council and the EDA Committee for the harmonious, enthusiastic and very professional support given to our Society. These thanks are also extended to all of you who have helped, in so many ways, to expand our membership and to give the ESB the increasing international profile which we now enjoy.

Finally, it just remains for me to wish you all a very Happy Christmas, combined with my personal best wishes for a peaceful, healthy and successful year 2011.

I hope to see very many of you in Dublin in September.

Yours sincerely,

Luigi Ambrosio

President
