European PhD - Background Information

GIVE YOUR PhD DEGREE A EUROPEAN DIMENSION! via THE EUROPEAN BIOMATERIALS AND TISSUE ENGINEERING DOCTORAL AWARD (EDA)

The European Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Doctoral Award (EDA) is not intended to supersede or replace a PhD degree, but to complement it with a diploma that demonstrates the international character of the PhD work. The European Doctoral Award is being recognised as a proof of quality and an added value for the CV of a young scientist.

The aim is to show that the graduate activities during the production of a PhD has additional international elements, namely:

  • work experience in two or more countries.
  • presentation of their PhD work at biomaterials conferences and publications in high quality international journals.

It is realized that these requirements are over and above those required for most PhD degrees. However, it is the opinion of the ESB Council and the Education Committee that these students should have additional recognition.

The subject of the PhD should be in the field of biomaterials or tissue engineering. Due to the differing times to publish, either during or after a PhD, in different countries, the PhD graduate has to up 2 years after the acceptance of their PhD to submit their application for the EDA.

PhD students interested in acquiring the EDA are strongly advised to submit a proposal of planned courses and external visits in the early stage of their PhD thesis to the secretary of the Education Committee.

For more information about the EDA and instructions for application, click on Requirements.

In case of questions, candidates or supervisors are advised to contact the secretary or the chairman of the ESB Education Committee for further clarification. The names and coordinates of the members of the committee can be found under Education Committee.
