About YSF
The YSF represents all Early Career Researchers of the ESB.
The YSF workshop is usually integrated in the annual conference of the ESB,
that is aimed at discussing biomaterials education and training in Europe,
emphasizing the existing and emerging career, as well as research opportunities
in the field.
During these events, discussion is fostered by creating an interactive environment amongst participants, thus promoting an enriching discussion on topics that concern everyone who graduated, or will do so, in Biomaterials.
YSF has contributed to the creation of the Julia Polak European Doctoral Award (EDA) in cooperation with the ESB Council, and was one of the first awards announced in February 2006.
New YSF board members elected in April 2022
Aims and objectives:
- Promote biomaterials education and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Provide a forum for communication for young scientists interested in biomaterials
- Enhance networking and encourage collaborations within the biomaterial’s community
- Organize meetings for dissemination of information relating to education and career in matters related to biomaterials

YSF Call for Projects
YSF Call for financial support for the organization of scientific events/workshops
The Young Scientist Forum (YSF) of the European Society for Biomaterials sponsors the organization of events/workshops for a total amount up to 1,200 Euros.
The final aim of the call is to promote the training of young scientists and to stimulate dissemination in the field of biomaterials in Europe. YSF may decide to partially sponsor the requested amount, depending on the number of selected applications and evaluation given to the applications.
- 2021 Awardees: Dr. Bert Van den Bogerd and Dr. Paula Soares
- 2020 Awardees: Dr. Alfredo Ronca and Dr. David Barata
- 2019 Awardee: Dr. Nicola Contessi Negrini
Bert’s project is to help organize the Annual Meeting for the Belgian Society for Tissue Engineering (2 - 3/12/2022). This conference is dedicated to the Belgian community of young biomaterials scientists. It covers the whole domain of tissue engineering and aims to bring together a mix of different scientific backgrounds. Paula’s project is the Regulatory Affairs in Biomaterials and Biomedical Devices. A symposium for early career scientists which brings closer aspects of regulatory affairs that young scientists in biomaterials and biomedical sciences should keep in mind in due time.
Dr. David Barata – Sponsored Project: Symposium Organoids With]Out[Borders
Symposium Organoids With]Out[Borders will be organized in November 2020 with the sponsorship of YSF-ESB. This event is associated with the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies (SPCE-TC) and has the aim to nurture and promote fundamental and translational research.
This online meeting will include sessions on the following specific topics: Mimicking development with stem cells and organoids; Organoids in disease I and II; Organ/tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
We invite you to join us in this event and contribute to a lively scientific discussion on the exciting field of organoids.

ESB2021 - 31st conference of the European society for Biomaterials
Conference Status with respect to the Coronavirus pandemic:
Taking into consideration the health and safety of all presenters, exhibitors and attendees, and the importance of assuring the quality of the Conference Program, the Organizing Committee has taken the difficult decision to move ESB2021 to a fully virtual format, from September 5-9, 2021.
For more information, check the website: https://esb2021.org
The YSF will organize two workshops at ESB2021:
The first YSF Workshop is entitled "YSF Opening workshop – Green Lab sustainability & Communication skills", and will be held on Sunday, the 5th of September, from 14:00 until 17:00. In this workshop, we will briefly explain the YSF’s “Green Lab sustainability” Initiative, and Pedro Alves (Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde - U. Porto (i3s), Portugal) will explain and share his “Greenlab experience”. Afterwards, the session on “Communication skills” will include insights on how to “Boost your Communication skills & How to do a good pitch” by Jane Bennett-Powell (freelance journalist and science communication trainer), followed by the important advices on “Pitching to Investors” from Sonia Hallen (LSP connecting investors to inventors, The Netherlands). During the same session, Jasper Van Hoorick (Ghent University & Xpect-INX, Belgium) will share his experience on the steps “From Academic research to spin-off company: the story of XPECT INX”. This session will end with an interactive round table with the audience.
The second YSF Workshop is entitled "Educational workshop – Writing and Publishing” (organized by YSF & “AERoGELS” COST action), will be held on Tuesday, the 7th of September 2021, from 12:00 until 13:00. This workshop aims at sharing tips and tricks on “Effective graphical abstract and covers” by Maria Southall (Executive Editor Biomaterials Science, Royal Society of Chemistry); Uta Goebel will, then, give her advices on how to proceed “From data selection to the best graphical representation” (Editor-in-Chief Advanced Healthcare Materials, Wiley). Christine Horejs will finally provide highly useful guidelines on “Assembling figure panels” by (Chief Editor Nature Reviews Materials, Nature). This session will end with an open discussion, with Q&A to the invited speakers.
Do not miss this opportunity, join us for both YSF Workshops at ESB2021!
